Bronwyn woke up, yawning slightly. She hopped out of her nest and, dragging her feet, made her way to the entrance of her hollow. She sat there for a while, running her beak through her feathers and looking down at the rest of the tree, bathed in the last light of the now-setting sun.
Once her feathers had been put in order, Bronwyn unfurled her wings and leapt out of her nest, taking to the sky. After doing a few loops and dives the guardian landed on one of the branches. It wasn't quite night yet, but it was certainly well into tween time- one of her favorite times. Bronwyn loved to watch the tree come to life at the start of the night, and she watched eagerly from her vantage point as owls began to stir.
She heard the clatter of talons landing on the branch beside her and turned curiously.

stefan Stefan soared through the sky, enjoying the way the thermals kissed his feathers and carried him lightly through the night. The stars winked down on him, his old friends, and he tilted his head and stared back, as if searching for answers. Many times, they'd held them, pointed the direction down the path he wanted to go. He had looked to them for guidance for a lifetime.
He flapped his wings as he descended slightly, removing himself from the thermal winds, and did a lap around the entire tree just for the heck of it. Just because Stefan was getting older didn't mean he didn't have to stay in shape. He'd gotten plenty of exercise each day taking students out to different places to practice their navigating skills, but he also enjoyed his own time alone during the birth of nighttime, when all was still and most owls still hadn't woke up yet.
Ah, he spotted someone. As he drew closer he saw that it was Bronwyn, a classmate of his, when she was also in the Navigation chaw. A year younger than him, but they'd been peers once. She had been a good leaner, and he saw her from time to time around the tree, though they didn't talk that much anymore. She had her own life now.
Lighting down, the branch Bronwyn rested on dipped slightly, and she turned her head as she heard his talons grapple the wood. "Fine night, huh?" he commented, folding his wings and settling down beside her. "Clear night with a good view of the stars. Perfect for navigating, wouldn't you agree?" it is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves. template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

The owl ruffled her feathers, blinking happily as one of her former classmates landed beside her, moving slightly to make more room on the branch. "Yes- I love the stars, " She hooted softly, her eyes shining. "Do you ever wonder how they got there?" Bronwyn relished being a Navigator, tracing the stars with her wings and following them. At first she was rather disappointed, but she quickly found that Navigation was one of her talents.
She relaxed, running her beak through her feathers to put them back in order. Stefan was one of the owls she had trained with, and one of the owls she thought of as a friend.

stefan He laughed, nodding, his eyes still fixed on some unknown distance in the darkness. "Who hasn't?" he asked rhetorically. "I teach Navigation. I wonder all the time. I've always pondered what was out there, beyond the owl kingdoms. It's dangerous to venture far, but I'm sure I could handle it, with the star map by my side. I'd love to take a team of Trackers and Navigators and just go explore. It's nice to know what's around us, you know? Maybe when I retire." He knew he wouldn't, not really. He loved teaching and loved spending time around the Guardians. Flying out there was a daring aspiration for him, but it'd also bring him far from home and the prospect made him slightly uncomfortable. He enjoyed the warmth of the Ga'Hoole tree, tended to so carefully by the Ga'Hoology chaw. It was just good here, and he liked it. He had learned from a young age to stop expecting too much.
"And what about yourself? Any plans since you're out of class now?" They'd been friends when they were back in the chaw together, but since then they'd drifted apart and Stefan had enjoyed their relationship. Laughing together and whispering to each other during flight trips-- now, he was the oldest in the chaw and completely alone-- well, obviously not alone, but it'd be nice to have someone to talk to his age while flying. Perhaps he'd invite Bronwyn along as a guest on one of his lessons, just for the company, at the very least. Stefan frequently had visitors, former students and some friends. It was a jolly job, and there was plenty to do. it is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves. template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

Bronwyn sighed, looking off into the stars dreamily.
"I've always wanted to just... pack up and go." She hooted softly. "I mean- I love the tree, but someday I'd like to go explore." She turned back to him with a small smile. "I don't have much of an idea. When I was younger I had my heart set on Blacksmithing, but suddenly I'm here. I'll just do the best I can and try to help the tree. Isn't that what everyone does?"

stefan Stefan cleared his throat. He hadn't known that Bronwyn wanted to leave, and he frowned. "The place of a Guardian is to ensure peace and happiness to every owl in the kingdom," he began. "I am perfectly content here, and exploring is not much of a need for me-- just a curious desire that sparks every once in a while. And I must admit, teaching my students and taking them on trips is already enough for me.
"But for you-- how can you do your duty as a Guardian if you are not satisfied yourself? Tending to the tree should not be a duty. If it feels like one, then I suggest you find happiness elsewhere. No one's telling you to stay, Bronwyn," Stefan said gently. "If you really want to fly out there, no one will stop you. The island will still be here when you get back. Just because you were born into the tree doesn't mean you can't leave." it is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves. template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

Bronwyn sighed, turning away from Stefan and instead staring off into the night sky. "That's the problem. I want to go, but at the same time... I live here. The tree is my home. My friends, my family... I've built my entire life here. I'd die if I ever had to leave it."
She turned to him. "I need something new- a change of scenery, something to do. I barely go out for a flight anymore."

stefan "Hm." Stefan tilted his head, but not exactly understanding Bronwyn's point. The world was open to her, unlike him. "If I were not a ryb, I would've offered to go with you," he hooted. "Bronwyn, let me stress that there is nothing that will stop you. You can go on an adventure all by yourself and come back when you need. I do not understand why you are still here!" he barked out a laugh. "The Ga'Hoole tree is not going anywhere-- your nest will still be waiting for you whenever you are ready to return. The world turns on its axis with or without you, dear friend. It is up to you where you place yourself in the world."
